Background : Designing and packing up User Interface (UI) elements into smartphones and touch tablet PCs have become a challenging task. The ideas of applying Invisible Touch Sensitive Area (ITSA) around the edges of touch screen buttons have been studied to improve the UI usability of these devices. However, no research regarding the shapes of ITSA has been performed. Therefore, the effects of ITSA types and hand movement directions for the target acquisition (MDs) on time performance and input accuracy were determined in this study.
Methods : A total 18 participants were enrolled in this study. A mobile tablet PC (Apple iPad2) was used. A total 16 sets of combinations for 4 types of ITSA and 4 MDs were examined. For all participants, operation time and total number of touches were recorded for every set of ITSA-MD combination. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the effect of ITSA and MD on touch UI performance.
Result : Touch interface performance was significantly (p < 0.05) affected by both ITSA types and target-approaching directions (MDs). The standard type of ITSA produced the best performance for all 4 MDs. Among the four directions of target-approaching, the left to right movement offered the best accuracy and time performance. The interaction effect of ITSA and MD on timing performance was significant. However, the effect was not significant on input accuracy.
Conclusion : Considering efficient ITSA distribution on small size touch buttons, we strongly suggest applying the standard type of ITSA rather than asymmetrical types. Although this research was limited to examination for small size buttons only, the results seemed to violate Fitts" law in a certain sense. Therefore, to clarify newly arisen issues, further research is needed to evaluate the effect of ITSA types applied to various button sizes.
