This study analyzes simile translations shown in English translations of Korean short stories. We will examine and describe figures of speech, which pertains to both Korean and English, and present their implications in the translation. The purpose of this study is as follows. Firstly, describing how to research the texts of simile, which have been hardly dealt with in existing research. Secondly, examining the norms of simile translations in the target texts.
In the analysis of the texts, we will look at distinctive features of the texts involving relevant items and describe the each translation norms. In the next stage, communicative translation of auxiliary concept are referred specifically, and the comprehensive analytical results are developed. The tool for analyzing is adopted from the equivalence categorization of Peter Newmark(1988).
The source text is a short story, Meari, written by O Youngsoo and published in 1960. The main target texts were translated by Hong Myoung-hee and W. E. Skillend.
As for the research method, we will describe the analytical categories and present translation examples adopting a prescriptive approach. In a formal analysis it will be examined whether the simile forms of the source text are reserved in the target text or not. In a content analysis, it is observed whether the meaning of the auxiliary concepts is reflected in the TT. We will also look at the translational features of each category and provide the alternative translation of the texts left out in translation. The analytical items for translation of auxiliary concepts in sense-for-sense translation are categorized into ‘functional equivalence’, ‘descriptive equivalence’, and ‘cultural equivalence’. These three ways of equivalence pursuit can propose an alternative measure for solving the problem in simile translation which take place due to linguistic and cultural difference between a source text and a target text.
