The purpose of this research is to suggest future prospects and the appropriate direction for the tourist development in Baengnyeongdo Island. First, tourism-geographical characteristics in physical and humanistic environments are confirmed to identify potential possibilities of tourist attractions. Second, advantages and defects, the major factors of opportunities and threats which have influenced the regional development of Baengnyeongdo Island toward a attractive tourist destination are examined to propose politic suggestions for the rational development through the SWOT analysis. Baengnyeongdo Island involves remarkable geomorphological and geological academic values, phenomenal aesthetics and outstandingly universal conservational values about biological multiplicity. So to speak, there are affluent scenic spots with the combination of various natural resources and examples of the ecosystem such as Dumujin Beach called `Haegeumgang of the Yellow Sea` with vertical cliffs and fantastic looking rocks, Sagot Beach which is famous for natural landing strip and similar to Italy`s Naples, Kongdol Beach which is composed of bead-like pebbles, Mulgae Bawi which is authorized a habitat of seals for the first time in Korea and designated as a Natural Monument by the Korean government, Peridotite-Basalt Coastal Park. In addition, Baengnyeongdo Island possesses prosperous humanistic characteristics for the tourist development, for instance Indangsu and Yeonbongbawi which were ascertained the real background of `Simcheongjeon`, Junghwadong Church at which the first gospel in Korea has landed, Jinchonri Shell Mounds as the largest midden in the South Korea and various monuments in relation to anticommunist partisan warfare. Therefore it must be the suitable spot for the field trip of cultural and historical relics, a pilgrimage and of national security inspection. Geographical situation as an separated island from inland and the back region of transportation infrastructure and the political distinctiveness caused by the worst military confrontation between the South and the North of Korea have become the motive power which has contributed Baengnyeongdo Island to preserve a world-wide rare superb view and the natural ecosystem without damage and destruction so far. With these tourism-geographical latent energy, the improvement of transportation infrastructure and the detente mood between the South and the North of Korea have given impetus to the expectation of regional growth and developmental investments. The potential values of future tourist development in Baengnyeongdo Island will be immeasurable, if the long-range master plan about hardware and software in tourist environments is established.
