The purpose of this study is to identify user-preferred gestures for functions that could be used across home appliances. Studies on designing gesture vocabularies have tried to derive gestures from users to enhance the intuitiveness and learnability. Few studies have identified user-preferred gestures across devices, which reduce the users’ memory load. In this study, eleven devices were selected to evaluate user-preferred gestures. Sixty-four participants divided into two groups were employed in the experiment. They evaluated their preference levels for the gesture candidates using a 100-point scale. The gestures with higher than 50 points on the scale were selected as the user-preferred gestures for each device. The gestures commonly preferred for the most devices were selected as the integrated gesture vocabularies for each function. As a result, nine gestures commonly preferred for each function across the devices were selected. This study provides insight into designing gesture vocabularies for target functions, especially for a smart home environment.
