Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between characteristics of devices and user-preferred gestures. Background: Recently, studies related to designing gesture commands have tried to derive gestures from users to enhance the intuitiveness and learnability of gesture commands. However, there are few studies to identify the relationship between characteristics of devices and user-preferred gestures. Method: 44 functions for 11 devices were used in this study for evaluation, and they were divided into two sets. 32 participants evaluated gesture candidates for the one set, and the other 32 participants for the other set in terms of preference using a 100-point scale. The user-preferred gestures for each function were selected based on the two criteria: above 50 point in the case of average for each gesture, and above median in the case of the selected frequency as the most preferred gesture among the gesture candidates for each function. Results: A total of 10 relationships between characteristics of devices and user-preferred gestures were derived. Conclusion: This study can give insights to design gestures for the similar functions with this study’s target functions. Application: This study can be used as a guideline for designing gesture commands.
