Mr. Liu Zaifu , famous Chinese literature who resides in U.S.A., had classified the works of 2002 Nobel Laureate in Literature Gao Xinjian as “Cold Literature.” In contrast, he has classified the works of 2012 Nobel Laureate in Literature Moyan as “Hot Literature.” Using Luxun as reference, he believes that “hot literature passionately embraces the reality of society and all its traits, good or bad,” so he regards Moyan as the embodiment of contemporary hot literature.
To take a writer’s passion level of participation and caring for society as the basis of argument is ignoring one important factor–the writer’s in-depth thoughts and consciousness: the insatiable passionate exploration and the bold, naked and primitive description that come from conscientious understanding and subconscious experience of life and death, body and soul, and truth and deception. Liu Zaifu’s definition may apply to Luxun alone, but it is not enough to apply to Moyan.
In this article, I attempt to discuss Moyan’s hot literature in two aspects, one based on Liu’s passion level in “embracing society”, and the other on the basis of “love for life.” Actually, Moyan has always tried new breakthroughs in his creative style, from early stages of “imitating the classics” to “original creation from scratch,” jumping from obeying rules and keeping in line to boldly describing totally different and contrasting emotions.
Using these jumps as objects of observation, I have set up five independent chapters each with two seemingly extreme contradictions such as fantasy and reality, bloody and civilized, resilient and stubborn, rebellious and reflective, and criticize and participate. Through analyzing and dissecting these differences and contrasts, I wish to examine the essence of Moyan’s “hot literature,” how he uses this method to describe the relationship between man and society, and how he applies this method to interpret the ultimate meaning of being a man.
