This paper perceives globalization as a product of imperialistic attempts. The imperialistic pursuits are fundamentally rooted in the dichotomous frame of perception; and Orientalism is the most self-evident example of this. Male and female, the West and the East have been considered as mutually exclusive concepts deriving from the desire for constructing identity built upon the East-West dichotomy, which led to distortion of notion and acceptance of achieving dominance through oppression and exploitation.
David Henry Hwang, the writer of M. Butterfly states that his intention was to reveal and overthrow the paradigm, which is hidden discreetly within Madam Butterfly, a major work of Giacomo Puccini. His intention behind his writing of M. Butterfly was to symbolically demonstrate the process of overthrowing the paradigm of dichotomous frame, which later questions and challenges the reality of cultural globalization since cultural globalization implicitly creates the division of ‘being American’ or not. Therefore, at the end of this deliberation and reflection, it can be concluded that cultural identity is not based singularly upon on the exclusive characteristics, but on its originality and uniqueness.
