This study develops embroidery patterns that appear on the traditional wedding robe of Hwal-ot into textile patterns that can suit modern tastes, and uses them to suggest potential garments that could be worn by brides and grooms in small weddings. Weddings are often held on a grand scale to reflect their importance to the bride and groom, but the emphasis placed on the appearance of weddings has led to adverse effects, such as the encouragement of excessive consumption. In response, a trend toward small weddings has emerged, promoting a wedding culture that abolishes empty formalities and vanity. Reflecting a greater desire among Korea’s younger generation to express their individuality, small weddings began to become diverse in form. However, the process of simplifying wedding ceremonies has also led to the fading of the traditional wedding culture and the spirit that such culture holds. For this reason, this study aims to add the traditional element of Hwal-ot patterns to small wedding garments in various ways to develop and design textile patterns that have modernized tradition, maintaining the economic efficiency of simple weddings, vitalizing the individuality of the bride and groom, and presenting a way of carrying on tradition. The research process was as follows. First, patterns that appeared on Hwal-ot relics, such as the phoenix, peonies, lotus flowers, birds, butterflies, peaches, and letters, were noted, and their symbols of marital harmony, the flourishing of descendants, and wealth and longevity were examined. Of these patterns, the patterns appropriate for this study were selected and a design program was used to construct motifs and create repeating units. These were used alone or in combinations of two, and after patterns were developed and mapped, designs were proposed. Items chosen for mapping were jackets, neckties, and handkerchiefs for men and a mid-length hourglass silhouetted dress for women, and these were based on analyses of wedding garments for couples found through internet data. The designs presented in this study will hopefully provide new possibilities for wedding photography garment designs that are appropriate for small weddings in the future.
