This study investigates the relationship between political predispositions and partisan media exposure among external columnists, as a group of opinion leaders in major newspapers, and how the relationship differs from that of the general public in Korea. This study classifies three types of partisan media exposure: (1) balanced exposure (i.e., exposure to both conservative and progressive sides), (2) view-consistent exposure (i.e., selective exposure to the media whose political stance is consistent with that of the audience), and (3) view-inconsistent exposure (i.e., selective exposure to the media whose political stance is inconsistent with that of the audience). Based on the classification, this study examines how external columnists’ partisan media exposure differs from the general public’s exposure, and how the relationship varies between the conservatives and the progressives. Based on the findings, we discuss the characteristics of Korean newspapers’ ideological landscape and the status of political polarization, and suggests future research agendas.
