Purpose of this study is estimating the money amount of consumer detriment existed in Korea during the 2014 fiscal year. To figure out the total money amount of consumer detriment, the data from the consumer detriment survey conducted by the Korea Consumer Agency and the data from the Sobi-net, which is an intranet system of the Korea Consumer Agency were combined. Firstly, the data obtained from the consumer detriment survey represents the amount of consumers detriment which has been acknowledged but non-reported by individuals. Secondly, the data from the Sobi-net represents the amount of consumer detriment which was processed in the damage relief procedure and the alternative dispute resolution procedure supervised by the Korea Consumer Agency. The weights and probabilities required in each stage of estimations were obtained from the 2015 Consumer Life Indicators in Korea.
As a result of estimation, it was revealed that the average money amount for the acknowledged detriment was 718,259 won, while it was 1,148,522 won for the reported detriment. The probability of experiencing consumer detriment during a time of year was 13.6%. Considering an adult population of South Korea, the total number of individuals experiencing consumer detriment during a year was estimated at 5.53 millions. We assumed that 85.2% was acknowledged detriments while 14.8% was reported detriments among the 5.53 millions cases. In sum, the total money amount of consumer detriment was estimated at 4.3 trillion won. Compared with the national GDP, the magnitude of the consumer detriment occupied 0.29%. Finally, the results of the estimation was compared with the cases of Japan and the UK.
