This study investigated English- speaking children’s acquisition of noun-noun (NN) compounds using the CHILDES Database in relation to three principles of acquisition of lexicon: semantic transparency, formal simplicity, and conventionality. The developmental patterns of NN compounds were analyzed in children’s spontaneous speech data between ages 1;0 and 5;0. The results revealed (i) that children started to produce NN compounds as early as age 1;2, (ii) that they produced semantically more transparent, syntactically less complex and more conventional compounds more frequently than the other types at all ages, and (iii) that similar tendency was found between the children from the the U.K. and those from the U.S. The overall results conform to the principles of acquisition of lexicon, providing another type of evidence for this field of study.
