The present study compared compliment responses of Koreans speaking English (KEs) with those of Americans speaking English (AEs). Compliments reponses of Koreans speaking Korean (KKs) were also examined to see if there was evidence of pragmatic transfer in this particular speech act. The research questions were: (1) Do AEs and KEs respond differently to compliments in English interactions? (2) Do relationships of interlocutors and topics of compliments affect compliment responses? (3) Is there evidence of pragmatic transfer from Korean to English in Korean subjects`` compliment responses? 40 subjects including 20 bilingual Koreans speaking both Korean/English (KKs/KEs) and 20 Americans speaking English (AEs) filled out Discourse Completion Tasks. The results showed that both Americans and Koreans differentiated their responses according to specific situations they were in. It was also revealed that the Korean subjects responded differently to compliments depending on the language they were using. Finally, evidence of pragmatic transfer was confirmed in Korean subjects`` compliments responses.
