Semantic Property of Korean Kinship Idioms. The Journal of Linguistic Science 64, 71-90 The Purpose lf this study is to examine the conceptualization of Korean kinship idiomatic expressions from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Our expectation is to understand how the idiomatic expressions are used, therefore, we researchers have vast interest in the conceptualization of language users so that we categories the expressions. To note the very first characteristic of the expressions, the number of the idioms regarding the blood relationship outnumbers the number of idioms regarding the marriage relationship. The second characteristic of the idioms emerges when describing the children. For example, there are a lot of idiomatic expressions relating daughter, son, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law. Son and daughter are conceptualized as precious, daughter-in-law as negative but son-in-law as positive. Regarding the idioms pertaining husband and wife, there is a clear pattern of has double-sidedness showing the conflict at times and mutual reliance at times.
