This study aims to analyze structures of argumentative writing of Korean university students based on meaning- making and Toulmin model. It also investigates the relationship between a successful and a non-successful pieces of work. The participants were 35 students, and the data comprised their argumentative essays. The findings revealed that most students used the basic Toulmin elements, claim, data, and warrant, with 78.9%, but a small number of the second elements, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal, were presented. While the successful essay established well organized ideational, interpersonal, and textual meaning-making with basic Toulmin elements, the lowest one failed to present desirable meaning-making despite both the basic and second Toulmin elements. This study concludes that Toulmin elements provided insufficient evidence to differentiate the overall quality of writing. Rather, the scores of the writing seem to derive from the meaning-making in the texts. (Sun Moon University)
