This paper focused on exploring the relationship between Cicero and Baugarten, in order to answer the following question: how did Baumgarten build the system of ars aesthetica on the basis of Cicero’s rhetoric. As a case study for this, I have demonstrated how Baumgarten’s key ideas of pulchritudo and magnitudo were related with Cicero’s decorum and modus concepts. According to my demonstration, Baumgarten has differentiated the idea pulchritudo from the Cicero’s decorum-concept for approaching the so-called question of pulchritudo ipsa(beauty itself). According to my analysis, however, Baumgarten’s magnitudo-idea originated in Cicero’s modus-concept. Doing this, I have discovered newly that Baugarten’s ideas of magnitudo come directly from Cicero’s magnitudo-thought. Textual evidence for this is in the following: Hoc in genere-nam quasi silvam vides-omnis eluceat oportet eloquentiae magnitudo (Orator 139).
