The most important medical issue from the late Goryeo Dynasty period to the early Joseon Dynasty period was the nationwide implementation of medical care through the use of domestic drugs along with an acceptance of advanced medicine. Efforts to address these problems were materialized through the publication of Hyangyak-jipseongbang and Uibang-yuchwi (醫方類聚), under the reign of King Sejong.
The publication of Hyangyak-jipseongbang had a significance from the aspect of the expansion of medical ingredients. However, a close investigation of these ingredients was required for the safe use of drugs. In contrast to the conservative parties represented by Hwang ja-hu(黃子厚), King Sejong(世宗) made an effort to actively reinforce the use of Hyangyak, carrying his opinion through Jiphyeonjeon(集賢殿) scholars and Doctor No jung-rye(盧重禮). As part of this initiative, he sent Doctor No jung-rye as an envoy as part of a diplomatic party to China to exchange views with Chinese doctors. As is already known, King Sejong sent missions to China in the fifth and twelfth years of his reign. Verification of Hyangyak was also required and a diplomatic party was sent in the ninth year of King Sejong’s reign. This thorough verification process was implemented because safety was required to expand the coverage of the Hyangyak that had previously been used.
In expanding Hyangyak, it was also necessary to secure prescriptions composed of drugs that were designated as Hyangyak, in addition to increasing the types of drugs. In this respect, Taepyeong-seonghyebang (太平聖惠方) began to receive attention. While Hyangyak-jesaeng-jipbang (鄕藥濟生集成方), which was published before Hyangyak-jipseongbang, mainly made use of Seongje-chongnok (聖濟總錄), Taepyeong-seonghyebang was published more than a hundred years before Seongje-chongnok. There was a special reason for this and it was that Taepyeong-seonghyebang introduced simple prescriptions that received a great amount of attention in the field of medical care during the Joseon Dynasty period, compared to Seongje-chongnok. It was also commonly understood that Taepyeong-seonghyebang focused on diseases more systematically and it was considered more useful.
Through extensive research on Taepyeong-seonghyebang during the publishing process of Hyangyak-jipseongbang, the Joseon Dynasty period accepted multiple prescriptions along with Hyangyak. At the same time, the foundation for academic development in the area of medicine during the Joseon Dynasty was prepared through the introduction of a series of diverse diseases.
