The objective of this article is to reveal the features and meaning of Segieui Pungun, which is a poetry book that had hardly been addressed in the history of poetry in Korea. Segieui Pungun was written by Kim, So-min and published by Baekjosa in 1962. This poetry book includes ‘Segieui Pungun,’ which is an epic poem using the Korean War as the subject matter, and also includes ‘Naeui Biga, long-form poetry showing the experience and inner impact on South Korea, and ‘Jeonhusang,’ long-form poetry criticizing South Korean society after the Korean War. Kim, So-min reveals the yearning for national unification by directly dealing with the reality of national division by putting forward the author’s self-identity as a problem for South Korea.
The epic poem, ‘Segiui Pungun,’ is an important text in the study of the tradition of contemporary epic poetry in Korea, based on the fact that it truly deals with the Korean War. Kim, So-min sought to remember the numerous youths around the world that were sacrificed during the Korean War through this epic poem, in order to emphasize that such sacrifices were made for the unification of the Korean peninsula. This epic poem displays extremely unique features. The features are that, the aspects of archival culture is strengthened in the form of the epic poem and the heroes of the epic poem are not national heroes, but are youths that can be found throughout the world. In addition, the fact that the poem is not composed of tales of growth or characteristic changes of the heroes, but that it presents inspiration through a dramatic development and tragic closing by casting the development process of the Korean War itself in an interesting light.
To Kim, So-min, the Korean War meant ‘failure of national unification.’ A ceasefire was not considered to be welcome news of stopping the war, but was a tragic incident for the nation that was regretful and despondent. This poetry book implies that the nihilistic trend during the post-war society cannot be distinguished from the ceasefire or national division process. In addition, this poetry book shows sentiment surrounding the theory of unification erupting after the 4.19 Revolution, and its limited effects.
