This study would purpose to look around the trend of Anthropological and Folklore studies investigating the cultural characteristics of Daegu and Gyeongbuk Area and grope for the proper way to establish the local studies. For this purpose, this study in the first place has looked around on objects, research activities and research results of institutes attatch to universities in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Area. Secondly, this study has discussed results and tasks of established studies focusing on local topographies, cultural area in folklore and village studies with regard to the characteristics of folk-culture in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Area. And lastly, this study has groped tasks and directions for the proper local studies. The results are as follows. First, research trends of institutes attatch to universities in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Area tend to focus on ways of life of upper class within the time boundary of traditional society. Recently, research direction of the institutes has been changed to expend research subjects both in time and space. These institutes now head for more variable subjects and study units like imagined communities, community transcended special area for establishing the proper local studies in the era of globalization. Second, reseaech results of local topographies, cultural area in folklore and village studies with regard to the characteristics of folk-culture in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Area are need to some new research approaches. These new research approaches are including investigation the existing aspects and meanings of traditional way of life in modern society, drawing cultural boundary subject to fluctuate according to chronical change, explaining the diversity, complexity and multiplicity within an cultural boundary and reconsideration of the utility of village as a proper unit for local studies. Third, the sociocultural change after modernization and industrialization in Korea society has accompanied the rapid extinction of the traditional way of life. Moreover the early modernization of Korea has been distorted by the colonial influence. So, it needs to scrutinize the archetype and authenticity of local culture systematically for preservation and inheritance our genuine way of life. For this purpose, it is desirable to take into account the ethnocartography.
