Busan is the 1st port and marine tourist city in Korea and is now growing to the center of conventions and hub city in Noth East Asia in the 21st century. However, an abnormal increase in population and urban sprawl after independence and the Korean War resulted in unplanned and ruthless development, which has significantly reduced urban competitiveness.
In addition, as sub-centers and new downtown have grown in Busan, residents in the old downtown moved to other areas and the old downtown that used to be the center of economic activities is in severe decay, aggravating the decline phenomenon. This study aims to understand development process of the old and new downtowns, focusing on this current state of Busan, and present a practical spatial boundary of the old and new downtowns. By doing so, it tries to draw lessons and contribute to policy-making on downtown development.
