This article surveys an emotion "fear", "be afraid of", which is regarded as one of human basic emotions. The semantic structure of the Russian verb bojat’sia has been analysed. Wierzbicka has adopted her own specific metaphoric semantic description to compare various emotional expressions. Her ways of descriptions of emotional expressions are based on her own comparative explanations to show the difference between emotions. However, Wierzbicka’s way showed overt limits and boundaries because the features of situations that produce the fear, the objects of the fear and the features of the subjects that feel the fear could not be explained enough. Russian emotional verb bojat’sa can be divided into four groups according to their semantic structures. The first group has close relation with situations in future and is based on the prior experiences. The second group is connected with a specific situation that produces the fear and the hope that it will not happen is also included. The third group has adopted the structure of bojat’sa za and the object of concern and situation. We should note that the concept of concern, not fear has been adopted in this group. Unlike other three groups, the forth group performs pragmatic and performative functions. It does not express the experience of an emotion but declares the emotion of fear. These four groups combine with various aspects of the emotion ‘fear’,’ be afrad of’ and show the different types of semantic structures.
