This article reviewed the major achievement and significance of the modern Chinese history studies in Korea, in relation to the crisis of history academia. The modern Chinese history study was initiated in 1980s, by myself and other scholars of my generation.
In order to overcome the aforementioned crisis, the reason why it is important to study Chinese history in Korea is worth asking. After putting the discussions altogether, the answer to that question can be narrowed down to three points. The first significance is to expand people’s perception about the Korean history and Korean national image itself. The second significance is to make an academic contribution to the international Chinese history academia through illuminating the nature of Chinese history through Korean scholar’s eyes. The third significance is to discover the potential alternative order, which is necessary to resolve the problem statement arisen from Korean peninsula’s realistic agendas. All of these three sets of significance, however, can be realized only if the awareness toward realistic issues that Korean peninsula is currently facing is accurately stated and raised.
Out of these aforementioned sets of rationale, me and other scholars of my generation proceeded the study with the special emphasis on the third significance. An ideas of the alternative order are still left as the potential heritage. Such ideas were pursued on the way to the present; however, it is not yet realized since conditions are not fully met. Thus, it is necessary to discover this alternative order and revive it as an ideological resource which designs the future.
