This paper aims to investigate the linguistic expressions that Korean EFL (K-EFL) postgraduates use when establishing a niche (NE) in the introduction and literature review section of applied linguistics research articles to see whether they employ similar or distinctive strategies, compared to English L1 (E-L1) scholars and a reference corpus (OANC). NE moves from the two sections of the K-EFL and E-L1 articles were compiled as a corpus after marking NEs with a move analysis framework adapted from the Swales" CARS model. Frequent words and keywords, using a corpus analysis program (AntConc 3.4.0 version), were analyzed. The results of the study illustrate the genre-, discipline-, section-, and NE-specific linguistic features of the K-EFL corpus shared with the E-L1 corpus such as the high frequency of certain contents words (e.g., research, learners), adversative connectors for gap-indication, and have/has + been. The results, yet, reveal the K-EFL"s distinctive patterns such as overuse of sentence-initial however, anticipatory it and existential there and underuse of modals functioning as hedges (e.g., may) and referential expressions (e.g., these, this). They employed more overt linguistic markers and less diverse lexical words, connectives, and syntactic structures. These findings suggest pedagogical implications for EFL student writers who pursue their memberships in a global academic community.
