This paper describes the design and implementation of a compact and low-cost PCR thermal cycler. Employing the standard computing device such as a personal computer reduced the system cost significantly. The design using the components from IT industry delivers further cost reduction. The total system was implemented with a local-host architecture, where a PC was employed as the host. The local system only executed the thermal cycling process and the management of temperature protocol files was taken by the host with a convenient GUI. Using multiple units of the presented system was also implemented and discussed along with the possible applications on such as finding the optimal PCR temperature condition. The comparison results on the temperature control show that the presented system was compatible to the expensive commercial thermal cyclers. The DNA amplification performance was also compared, which showed no distinct difference with the conventional equipment.
