The government-led publication of books is one of the ways to implement national policies. In this vein, the Joseon(朝鮮) dynasty promoted policies for suppressing Buddhism and advocating Confucianism, but still published not a few Korean Buddhist Texts with the aid of governmental supports since the invention of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音). This study examined and discussed the backgrounds and the purposes of publishing the Korean Buddhist Texts during the Middle Korean period in light of their historical significance and linguistico-cultural value. The topics investigated are as follows: The chapter 2 made a list of Korean texts published during the Middle Korean period, especially from 1443 when Hunminjeongeum was invented, to the end of the 16th century. We further focussed on the Korean Buddhist Texts during this period and examined the backgrounds and purposes of their government-supported publication. It was found that they were published to the memory of the king, queen, and prince that had passed away, and in prayer of the kingdom`s prosperity. Their publication that was made in the name of the king, his queen mother or his grandmother contributed greatly to the spread of Hunminjeongeum. The chapter 3 suggested that the Korean Buddhist Texts published in the 15th century inherited the tradition of translating Buddhist Texts in Kugyol(口訣) in the Goryeo(高麗) dynasty, but they were translated into Korean in an innovative way that conforms to the Korean language of the 15th century since the invention of Hunminjeongeum. The chapter 4 showed that the Korean Buddhist Texts during the Middle Korean period embraces important linguistico-cultural values. Most of the Korean Buddhist Texts in the 15th century were government-led publications, but all of them in the 16th century were published with the aid of local temples. The former made a great contribution to the spread of Hunminjeongeum and the standardization of both the Korean language and the Korean writing system. Likewise, the latter made a great contribution to creating the cultures of the local regions by utilizing their dialects.
