The purpose of this article is to define and establish elements of the thinking skills for Korean for academic purposes. Since the 2000s, the number of Korean learners for academic purposes has rapidly increased and this poses demands for a differentiated and more specific curriculum. Nowadays teaching materials and syllabuses for Korean education for academic purposes have been developed, yet showing many problems about the identity of Korean education for academic purposes and the systemicity of the curriculum. This article considers the characteristics of academic discourse communities and its context in order to define first the concepts of Korean education for academic purposes, and second to establish the elements of thinking skills for Korean for academic purposes. This study suggests three types of thinking skills in Korean for academic purposes. The first one is the thinking ability required for academic communication. Thinking ability can be defined as the knowledge that combine propositional knowledge and procedural knowledge, and the thinking skills needed to process such knowledge. The second one is language use ability. It makes possible to understand or express meaning in the academic context. Language use ability indicates the ability to use distinct language skills and even integrated language skills in the academic discourse. This article took into consideration that academic discourse can be performed all over individual and social domains. The last one is study skill, considered as a psychological and behavioral skill for a proficient academic performance. The three kind of thinking skills suggested by this articles are presented as theoretically grounded.
