The Seok-eum-dam (惜陰談) manuscript is a Korean translation of the Chwe-eon-si-jip (贅言試集), a compilation of questions and answers written in Japanese. The Seok-eum-dam was written in the beginning of the 19th century and used as a Korean textbook in Tsushima (對馬島). Later, it was transferred to Naeshirogawa and transcribed by a Korean interpreter (a Japanese) in Naeshirogawa. Because the Seok-eum-dam is composed only in the Korean language, Korean interpreters first translated the Korean content into Japanese. They then compared the results with the original Japanese sentences in the Chwe-eon-si-jip. Therefore, we can assume that as a Korean textbook, the Seok-eum-dam was used in an advanced course. The Seok-eum-dam is a compilation of Korean interpreters` questions and Japanese interpreters` answers made in the Weagwan (倭館) where Korean and Japanese interpreters mediated diplomatic ideas between the two countries. The Seok-eum-dam contains various topics, such as uniquely Korean things, Korean manners and customs, Korean culture and institutions, and the institutional changes in Korea-Japan relations. It is understood that these conversations were actually held in the Choryang Weagwan (草梁倭館). Therefore, we can assume that the Seok-eum-dam was designed to be a guidebook not only for Korean interpreters to gain a basic knowledge of Korean culture, but also to elevate their skills in diplomatic negotiation with Korea.
