Akutakawa Rhyeunoske"s literature is based on antinomy, so it is composed of poetic words - metaphor, allegory, symbol, paradox, etc. This is a way to exprss antimomy which can not be conveyed with a matter of fact or logic. In this effort for true "realism"(it is different from the 19C"s realism or the description of naturalism), we can understand Akutakawa"s "poetic spirit" and "poetic justice" emphasized in writing of art. Therefore it is difficult to know the author"s intention without understanding the poetic words. But the criticism of Akutakawa"s literature is distorted with a lot of misunderstanding and prejudice from a superficial view. It was inevitable at that time indulged in a collective error by naturalism. However it has been neglected as it was until today modernism becomes popular. This study is trying to check up the criticisms of his last work, Saihounohito(The Westerner), especially perverted with prejudice and misinterpretation. In the work Akutakawa was pursuing the poetic justice and truth(the holy spirit) through a metaphor of Jesus Christ. But almost all of the criticisms took a superficial word from the text and compared with a word of the Bible. Other points were interpreted as a result of fact of writer"s past - his relationship with a woman, nervous breakdown, self disunion, and so on. This misunderstanding basically comes from a confusion of content and form in the construction, moreover, a prejudice against his frustration and failure. We can not understand the work with superficial words or a fact of his life. Now such criticisms should be corrected.
