The main aim of this study was to reevaluate the theory of General Adaptation Syndrome, GAS, proposed by Seltzer in 1952, through the application of strength training based on nonlinear periodization as well as cycling training. Eleven national cyclists were recruited to experience training program for 8 weeks based on GAS and periodization theory. The variables to confirm the effects of our training program were body composition, isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexion and extension and anaerobic pedaling power by using Wingate system. As a result of the training program, body composition and aerobic pedaling power were not changed pre-to-post. Also, isokinetic strength of knee flexion in national cyclists were not affected by 8 weeks training program, but that of knee extension was increased by about 15% and this was statistically significant (p<.05). Our training program based on GAS and periodization theory is sufficient to increase lower body strength, but this increase in knee extension was not transferred to pedaling power. This is partly because the training program focused mainly on strength increment not on pedaling power. Therefore, another training programs should warranteed following this training program to increase pedaling power.
