The living space should be engaged to support the independent living of people with disabilities, but the rural residential environment is currently in the midst of a very harsh environment and the risk of an accident. As this study is a preliminary study to look at the remodeling of the indoor environment to give effect to the independence, the purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the current housing environment to inhibit the independence of the handicapped. For such a purpose, 25 households of physically disabled people have been visited for interview and on-site research. The results are summed up in this paper as following: The most uncomfortable and lowering the independence topic was uninstalled non-slip handle and anti-slip material when bathing. And the installment is essential to be empty at lower space in the kitchen working on sitting the wheelchair posture. Most of such houses had too high thresholds that posed danger and inconvenience. As these issues represent, current housing for disabled people in the rural area turned out to be hinder their independence. After this study, it will figure out that remodeling elements of indoor environments will affect on independence of physically disabled. Eventually, it will be connected to guide customized housing plan for the physically disabled.
