This study is to investigate that Mexican costumes found in the works of Frida Kahlo, Mexican woman painter. The works were analyzed with the world of Frida`s painting categorized into four periods. Born in the suburbs of Mexico City in 1907, Frida Kahlo left a total of 143 works for 28 years, among which 55 pieces are self-portraits. As for situations in Mexico in the 1920s, there was a boom of protecting traditional art and Frida`s husband, Diego Rivera, wanted her to wear Mexican traditional clothes. Traditional costumes were also suitable to cover her wound in legs. Frida`s works have autobiographical elements realistically expressed. Therefore, her works have the then Mexican costumes expressed well as follows First, traditional costumes Frida enjoyed wearing were Tehuana Costumes worn by Tehuantepec women in Oaxaca State in the southern part of Mexico. Among them, upper garments in Huipil with ∪-shape patterns, wide long skirts with frills of white lace at the hem, head dress called Huipil Grande, and long shawl called Rebozo can be found in her works. Second, as for colors, there is remarkably strong color contrast found in brilliant Mexican folk art. There are red, green, blue, yellow, black, pink, white, and so on. Plain, toto, floral, diamond, and geometrical patterns can be found, along with pleated decoration like ruffle, embroidery, stitches, and fringes. Third, as for the hair style, woolen yarn or ribbon was often used to braid and hold hair. As for shoes which were rarely seen because Frida liked clothes trailing along the floor, she wore sandals and men`s shoes. As for ornaments, earrings, gold necklaces, and beach necklaces for Maya can be found. Frida Kahlo`s life and artistic world has been introduced to people through books and films and Mexican costumes found in her paintings are becoming the source of inspiration for fashion designers since 20th century.
