Townhouse enjoys an increasing importance and attention in housing market in recent days. This study tries to draw this attention into propose a design of an outside space on a townhouse being planned in Ansan city by developing an understanding of a great master of the Joseon dynasty for his creative style of painting and extraordinary endowments. The study, first, examines the artist himself, an outward appearance, characteristics and the art works of Danwon(Pen name號, Birch Garden) Kim, Hong Do, the artist of the Joseon dynasty. The ancient Oriental Fine Arts share a latent spirit of the Cosmic Dual Forces and the Five Primary Substances(陰陽五行) principle, a view of life in Eastern world which affects daily human lives and provides wisdom as living guidelines being closely related to human history. Therefore, the art works of Kim, Hong Do, sharing the very exact spirit as well are interpreted on its grounds and included as properties of a design process. Further, he is renowned and appraised that his art works represented the spirit of his time but also the lives of ordinary people of Korea today because they revealed the aspects of typical Koreans. Thereby, the principal factors of conceptual design drawn out of the masterpieces, which share a view of life in Eastern world could embody an identical constituent and are comprehended in a design process by involving creative reproduction. At close, a design of an outside space(五方位, 東·西·南·北·中央) is proposed one step forward via applying a conceptual foundations of a design concept from the findings of the previous phase. The positive concept realized in the design plan is able to find its way to ascertain a design customized to fit our own preference. The aim of this study is to develop a design concept to approach a design process and definitively, to cope with a planning of the townhouse by means of interpreting important masterpieces of Danwon Kim, Hong Do. The significance of this study is that a concept development of a design process could grow out of the art forms of manifolds. However, for a limited resource, lack of expertise, little hands-on experience provided in this particular research only could allow the suggestion in a qualified sense.
