An overwhelming sweep of information wave, which has influences on whole world more radically in the 21st century than ever, drives international exchanges and cooperations between countries. In this context, a variety of exchanges and cultural contacts motivate many people to paradoxically emphasize the attempts and necessity to let world citizens know more original and inherent elegance and culture of Korea even under the influence of ever-globalized living environment and consumption. Thus, in terms of subject matter for discussion, this study focused on formativeness of geometric patterns on latticework made in the era of Joseon dynasty, which is a crucial part of architectural structure forms for Korean original traditional patterns and reveals a variety of geometric shapes well. The purpose and intention of this study was to understand importance of geometric shapes as the most essential expression mankind wants to realize, and start from understanding about their formative principles and their characteristics based on the principles to discuss and analyze formativeness of latticework patterns from geometric perspectives. Another purpose of this study is to analyze modern design application cases based on various patterns of latticework made in the era of Joseon dynasty, so that it can explore possibility of our traditional latticework to create Korean original images and evolve into more advanced forms of Korean contemporary design. Summing up, it will be required to reestablish Korean original identity before proactively applying geometric characteristics of Korean traditional latticework patterns to various fields of our contemporary design in the future. On the other hand, it will be also necessary to conduct a series of follow-up studies over longer term than now, so that Korean traditional latticework may be recognized and supported in its contemporary meanings and values.
