Opal finishing fabrics is produced by the burning out or dissolving away of one of the fibers in a mixed-fiber cloth which results in the cloth being patterned in open and more solid areas. The style has had a revival in the last few years particularly in Britain in 1972-1973, partly because of the greatly increased use of polyester/cotton blends. Some delightful lingerie and blouse fabrics have been produced in the lower and medium price-brackets many printed in the Far East. As well as having a burn-out pattern the effect can be enhanced with colour; in polyester/cotton these would be disperse colours. But, latest, although the style was too specialized to be widely used nevertheless many original and beautiful effects were obtained, particularly with silk/cotton or silk/viscose rayon velvets to produce lacy effects. The success of the technique relies upon the selection of suitable base cloths. For most effects it is important that the different fibers are present in both the warp and weft of the fabric or the cloth might fall apart. A fabric similar to cut work can be created if a cloth with a single fiber type is used; with careful selection if the design, whole shapes can be burned away producing a delicate fretwork effect. This Opal finishing can give fabrics high value added therefore Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the present position of domestic Opal finishing, that is, the technique, design and competitive power, and is to consider the method to improve the competitive power of Opal finishing goods.
