The article discusses the functions of full participle forms in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel, The Master and Margarita. The peculiarity of Russian participles as a category lies in their hybrid nature, as a participle combines the features of a verb and noun. This relates to the fact that a participle can be used syntactically to express different meanings, while its categorical morphological status remains unchanged. The article analyzes the semantic and syntactic (‘proposing’ and attributive) functions of participles, their substantivizing potential, and their use in deictic forms using examples from the novel.
Bulgakov was well aware of the categorical nature of participles and their rich possibilities and actively used them throughout the novel in his literary strategy and as part of his literary palette.
