In this paper, I examined the life and main theological concerns of Professor Hong Suk Choi in order to commemorate and congratulate his retirement of professorship at the Chongshin Theological Seminary(= CTS). This paper is divided into five sections. In the second section, I surveyed the early formative life of Professor Choi. He had received strict education of faith from the Koshin Church. Meanwhile, he had received the public education in the Geochang High School. Its principal Youngchang Jeon had influenced many students greatly including Professor Choi. After graduating, he went on to Hanyang University where he majored in Engineering in regard to his parents’ wish. Then, he proceeded to CTS in order to learn the basic theological education. There he met many professors by whom Choi received much influences by teaching and practice of piety. Among them, Professor Youngbae Cha, by whom Choi had learnt the Dutch reformed theolgy and the languages such as Dutch and Latin, affected Hong Suk the most. After graduating CTS successfully, he moved to the Netherlands for further study in theology. He prosecuted Doctorandus coursework under the supervision of Professor Klaas Runia who had stood for the historic reformed theology in the contemporary period.
In third section, I examined the public activities of Professor Choi after returning to the South-Korea. After earning Drs. Th. degree in Kampen Theological University, he has served as a professor of systematic theology at his alma mater, CTS. Meanwhile, he has not at all involved in external activities. He has solely devoted to lectures, guidance of students and research. He has taught the Doctrine of God, Theological Anthropology, and Ecclesiology especially. He has won the perpetual respect from the students, thanks to the godly influence and enthusiastic lectures. Above all, he left the strong impressions to his disciples whoever cannot forget professor Choi easily. Many disciples used to call him “the saint of Chongshin”. However, he did not pay attention to such respect or title at all. He used to speak of himself as a mere man of Coram Deo who cannot live on without the grace of God. Such God-centered and humble attitude of life has influenced to his innumerable disciples greatly and deeply.
In fourth section, I overviewed the theological concerns expressed in his many books and articles. And then I made concluding remarks in the last section.
