We have seen through the unpublished novels set in Korea, 「Chichitowatasi」, 「Sorano, hosi」. Stories were covered with the content and themes which were described in 「Mathubauri」, 「Shodou」, 「Kaketathuno」, 「Ubawaretakotoba」, 「Tekihathu」. Which means, writer is criticizing the colonial policy such as: crackdown on white, forced labor, prohibition on teaching Korean and history, Japanese as a public language, Japanese loan sharking. Also stories did portray that Koreans suffered from the hardship of life under those colonial policies.
However Hayasi Koji said that ‘Jung Sung-bak did not join the resistance movement against imperialism of Japan.’ I understand that definition of the resistance movement would be questioned, still the writer is describing real life of Korea which was the colony of Japan. It is reflection of the reality of Korea as a colony and that can be the part of the resistance movement against Japanese imperialism. The Opinion of Hayashoi Koji can be accepted when we consider that Jung Sung-bak has litarary features which were very different from first generation of Korean-Japanese writers. As I mentioned above, the story is showing that consideration and relationship based on humanism between Korean people and Japanese people even including Japanese policeman. But also there is diatribe against the unfair treatment of Japan. I would say Jung Sung-bak‘s works reperesent his view of pan-nationalism across the nationalism. Two works above are supporting that his criticism is based on justification and fairness transcended nationalism.
