Various studies have been made of Koreans’ view of Japan during the Joseon Period. However, the number of such studies pales in comparison to the number of studies of Japanese people’s view of Korea; and, notably, the number of studies focusing on Koreans’ hostile view of Japan is even smaller. Korean hostility towards Japan has long been regarded as a natural and ‘objective’ fact, but few studies examining the concrete background to such hostility exist.
This study attempts to shed light on the reality of Korean hostility towards Japan after the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598) during the Joseon Period, which remains relatively unexplored. There was some consistency in Koreans’ view of Japan, particularly with regard to their hostility, during the Joseon Period. From the 17th century on, the Koreans regarded the Japanese as enemy, contrasting somewhat with their view of Japan in the preceding period, which was characterized by feelings of contempt towards such ‘barbarians’. The newly formed hostility towards Japan was closely linked to the collective memory of Japanese invasion at the end of the 16th century. This may be described in the following terms: “The memory of the Japanese invasion in the late 16th century” = “Hostility toward Japan”= “The collective view of Japan as an enemy.” Such a mindset was evident even among laterg enerations of Koreans. The hostility felt towards Japan, which formed in the wake of the seven-year war in the late 16th century, persisted in the minds of most Koreans until the early 20th century, when Japan annexed Korea as a colony.
At that point, the scarcely forgettable memory of Japan’s invasion in the 16th century had been inseparably linked to Koreans’ deep-seated hostility towards the Japanese for more than three centuries. As Choe Ik-hyeon(崔益鉉),who led a voluntary militia against Japanese colonists in the late 19th century, put it resolutely, Koreans regarded the Japaneseas “enemy barbarians” and as people with whom Koreans “could notbear to live under the same sky.” In this sense, the impact which the Japanese invasion in the late16th century had on the Korean people throughout the rest of the Joseon period can be said to have been decisive.
