In Hollywood where a lot of computer graphics are used in film production, previsualization in the planning stage is generalized. It is usually called previz which is understood as a concept similar to animatics in pre-production stage, and it gradually broadens the scope of utilizable media in Korea. Previz has an advantage that it can minimize risks that may occur during the production of live-action movies by simultaneously providing various informations contained in shots and scenes. Because of such convenience and efficiency, softwares dedicated only to previz are currently commercialized. For the commercialized softwares dedicated to previz, easy accessability and realization of fast speed with light capacity can be an advantage, but they have disadvantages that comparably low quality character animation and particle animation cannot be seen correctly. This study made an overall investigation on the functional characteristics of representative software dedicated to previz, and also made an analysis on the pros and cons of each program tool focusing on camera movement, rendering and special effects to be identified on site in real-time among the various functions of storyboard-dedicated softwares and 3D high-end softwares. Through such analysis, this study intended to provide the essential information necessary to select and utilize software in the pre-visualization stage. Through this study, more active utilization of previz can be expected in visual content planning field.
