Film makes a unique reality through the special story form and cinematic expression. Also, the audience come in contact with the images intermediated on camera because they experience the movie through the screen. Film can make us feel depth and atmosphere of the space in various ways through camera techniques and even imaginary spaces as well. Film can express impossible or unrealistic territory because images are very artificial and can be controlled by camera techniques, editing form and post effect. The audience perceives space all the time and the space adds a reality and help the audience to absorb the movie. Monsieur Godard says that film is a dream and inside the theater is a reality that the audience should not get confused between reality and dream. However film makes the audience to dream. Because of the environmental similarities of film and reality, film"s virtual images and reality get united. It is obvious that they have these similarities because film reflects and reorganizes the reality in general. Space is the most common thing among these similarities.
According to Robert Mckee, film is a process of making something mental to material. Precisely, film should express character"s internal mind or feeling by something that is seen or heard of dominant situations. The audience understands narrative and its meaning by perceiving visual and spacial arrangements in the movie. As a background, space expresses a story more easily and emphasize as well. Therefore, filmmaker should study expressing methods through spaces for theme and psychological development. Space is a main structure of film and it can have many different functions. Thus, this study will analyze and focus on the expressing methods on space direction of many different films and find about its role and appropriateness.
