Examined in this article is how a population block was formed in the border areas(“兩界”) of Goryeo, and especially how in the Northern Realm, usually known as “Buk-gye.” The border areas were newly pioneered in the early years of Goryeo, and in those years residence groups and political entities with diverse historical and cultural backgrounds continued to enter the region and settle down. The Northern realm was no exception, so examining the nature of such population, as well as a ‘collective consciousness’ that would have formed by the people there, and not to mention the meaning such consciousness would have had inside the confines of the Goryeo society, should be deemed worthy and explorable in future studies.
Korean historical studies devoted to this subject have examined what kind of special administrative structure was employed for the governing of the region, and what kind of military system was applied to areal defenses. The primary goal of such studies was to determine how the central government actually ruled those border areas so distant from the center of the country. Meanwhile, activities of the local residents were merely considered as rebellious insurrections which must have been triggered by all the fluctuations that disrupted the Goryeo ruling structure around the 12th century. This centralheavy perspective underneath existing studies has the potential of blinding the historians from the fact that local residents were the masters of their own lives and would have acted accordingly.
The Northern realm was a space that served as a line drawn between Goryeo and the Northern tribes, but it was also a portal through which both Goryeo and foreign tribes continued exchanges with each other. Sometimes people from both sides actually decided to create pockets of actual coexistence. Then they would have created a new perspective, new thinking pattern, and ultimately, a new consciousness. Such locality is explored in this article, which intended to examine the lives and actions of the Buk-gye residents and analyze them through their own eyes.
In order to do so, the most ‘foreign’ tribe the Goryeo people encountered amongst all others which entered the Goryeo realm through the Northern border, the ‘Naturalized Jurchen figures,’ are primarily examined here in terms of the settlement process and assimilation. The formation of a senior group to lead the hierarchy structure inside the region is analyzed as well, and most importantly, the kindred consciousness they would have formed together around the 12th century, is explored as well.
