This study is focused on the ecofeministic study of Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Good Morning, Midnight. I carried out the work specifically based on the Cultural Ecofeminism which is a branch of ecofeminism. Cultural ecofeminists emphasize an intimate connection between womanhood and nature and find similar qualities between them such as caring and nurturing.
In this paper, Tess is reinterpreted as an active woman who puts her motherhood into practice by communing with all living things and devoting herself to them. Meanwhile, Sasha in Good Morning, Midnight strives to be out of isolation in the patriarchal metropolis and recover the relations between her and the outside world through her self-sacrificed love. Those characteristics that the two women represent in their lives are regarded as spirituality, womanhood, or motherhood in Cultural Ecofeminism.
In spite of arguing that those ecofeminist views can continue the patriarchal ideology, I think their arguments can be our practical ethics and alternatives to overcome patriarchal hierarchy. Through this kind of reading, I hope the sphere of ecofeminist reviews will be broaden.
