What is the meaning of happiness in Korea? Is the concept of happiness proposed in the United States applicable to Korean culture as well? Studies on the happiness in Korea has advanced using the framework proposed in United States. However, qualitative studies and cross-cultural studies using Korean participants suggest that concept of happiness is not universal.
To investigate the possibility that Korean and American embrace different concept of happiness, we conducted a survey study. Undergraduate participants in this study rated their happiness in surveys made in the United States as well as in Korea. Exploratory factor analysis showed that the happiness in the United States is composed of emotional, psychological, and social factors; while the happiness in Korea consists of emotional, relational, psychological, social, and socioeconomic factors. Specifically, family relations and socioeconomic elements such as financial means, religion, appearance, health, and leisure were recognized as important factors in the concept of happiness in Korea, though the same elements were not important factors in the concept of happiness proposed in United States. On the other hand, importance of psychological and social factors were reduced in the concept of happiness in Korea compared to that in United States. The ways to rethink and change concept of happiness in positive way were discussed in the general discussion section.
