This paper first analyzes the use of “daro” and “desho” used as expressions of supposition and request for confirmation in both formal and informal speech of 4 Korean learners. Then it focuses on HT speech data, which was collected during his language acquisition period (2001-2002) in Japan and also ten years after his return to Korea (2012-2014). The results are the following:
(a) The learners acquire first the “desho” form, but its used only as a request for confirmation of shared knowledge. In the following stage, the acquisition of “daro” is observed followed by the use of this form with the function of supposition. It is believed that the learners first acquire the peripherical use of these forms and later their central use.
(b) It was also observed that the learners acquire style switching competence, using “desho”, “daro” and “yaro” according to the degree of formality of the situation.
(c) “Daro” is mainly used to express “doubt”, “supposition” and “request for confirmation of a proposition”. Both “daro” and “desho” are used as “request for confirmation of shared knowledge”.
Assuming that the acquisition of “desho” and “daro” shows an expansion of their meanings and functions from the periphery to the center, “desho” is the form used to express “request for confirmation of shared knowledge”, which is considered to be a peripheral use among the ones mentioned above.
