The Hebrew Bible includes some texts which regard the disabled as defective and unclean in order to justify excluding them from their community. Since physical or mental disability or disease are incompatible with the completeness and holiness of God, people who are ill or disabled had to be removed from the Israelite community. However the texts of the prophets in the Babylonian exile, such as 2 and 3 Isaiah show that disability or disease are not punishments, but a part of Divine Providence. Salvation and freedom come through disability and suffering. On Yahweh`s Day the disabled will be accepted as the people of God and as everlasting members of the Kingdom of God. Thus the Hebrew Bible presents a theological basis for the social inclusion of the disabled.
