There are many ways to study the understanding of human beings in the Old Testament. Through Hebrew narratives, prophetic literature, poetry, and other sources, the aspects of human beings are revealed. The writer, however, first tries to understand human beings through the analysis of three Hebrew terms, basar(body), nepes(soul or life), ruah(spirit), which are traditionally regarded as the basic components of human beings. In addition to these three terms, other related terms are considered. Then, the writer concentrates on the creation narratives of Genesis 1-2, which introduces the philosophy and religious conviction of human beings in the community of the ancient Israel. Although each of the three Hebrew terms has its own semantic fields, they also have a common ground. All three terms often refer to the totality of humanity in the various contexts. For this reason, it is suggested that they are the representatives of human beings as well as parts of the wholeness of humanity. The life of human beings are sustained through dynamics and close relationship among the three parts: body, soul, and spirit. The creation narratives show that the Hebrew phrase selem elohim (image of God), implies the visible as well as the invisible aspects of God. Moses` meeting with God face to face and the incarnation of Jesus can be the examples of God`s invisible spirituality which can be visible in a meaningful context. To summarize this thesis, human being described in the Old Testament cannot be understood only by one special term or an idea. Rather, human beings are described with many terms in the Hebrew Bible. Body, soul, or spirit is only a part of a human being. When they are in good relationship, the divine healing and salvation can be realized. This is quite beautiful harmony between the wholeness of God and the mere parts of human beings.
