The purpose of this paper is to present how to teach and practice `forgiveness and reconciliation` (hereafter F&R) in the field of pastoral area, that is, the world and the church altogether. To accomplish this goal, the Joseph story is presented as a good example for F&R since this story contains conflicts, hatred, jealousy, violence and disunion between the brothers and finally demonstrates all these problems as solved. The methodology adopted here is the canonical approach which sees the Joseph story as a coherent literary work because the present form of the story is not a mere coincidence but has a carefully planned structure to convey its intended message, which is closely related to F&R. Especially, this paper tries to prove that the Joseph story employs the distinctive skill of `reenactment` as a literary technique which reenacts the first part of the story in the second part. Through the four steps of reenactment by Joseph, Joseph and his brothers reach the eventual climax of F&R. First, as soon as Joseph encounters his brothers, he falsely accuses his brothers as spies and imprisons them. They begin to be reminded of their past crime. Joseph let one brother remain in the Egyptian prison and others go back to their father with money in their sacks. This must remind them of when they sold Joseph. Second, Joseph commands them to bring their youngest brother. The brothers take Benjamin, Joseph`s substitute, and some gifts for Joseph, such as gum, balm and resin (formerly Ishmaelite merchants`s stuff, Gen. 37:25) and they go down to Egypt. This reminds them of when the Ishmaelites, having these stuff, took Joseph and went down to Egypt. Third, when they see again Joseph, he let them eat with him and he gives Benjamin`s portion five times as much as anyone else`s. This reminds them of Jacob`s partiality toward Joseph and Benjamin. Fourth, Joseph puts his cup into Benjamin`s sack and pretends to make him a slave in Egypt. Now the brothers are provided the best opportunity to abandon Benjamin as they did to Joseph before. But Judah appeals to Joseph on behalf of Benjamin and even Judah abandons himself to be a slave in Egypt instead of Benjamin. Judah`s character transformation plays the role of a touchstone to demonstrate the change of the brothers and that makes possible the reconciliation and union between Joseph and his brothers. Thus, the four steps of reenactment Joseph has set function to reveal the transformation of the brothers and present two important things for F&R. The harmer must remember his/her past crime and repent it up to the point of submitting to punishment. The sufferer must understand the will of God to let the past suffering go (Gen. 45:1-8). This F&R make possible the reunion of the brothers and the kingdom of God without division.
