There have been several hermeneutical problems raised for the Sermon on the Mount, as the history of interpretation has shown. Especially the so-called six antithese of Matthew 5:21-48 have particular difficulties. For examples, to whom the Sermon is addressed, whether it is directed to the crowds or to the disciples, whether it applies to individuals or communities. Are all parts of the Sermon to be interpreted literally, or hyperbolically? More importantly, does the Matthean Jesus strengthen the teaching of the law or overturn the teaching of Moses? Even among Korean scholars theres have been some different interpretations: professor Park Soo Am, a pioneer of the study of the Sermon on the Mount in Korea, argues that while the three antitheses(1st, 2nd, 6th) complement the Old Testament Law that is claimed partially imperfect, the remaining antitheses(3rd, 4th, 5th) abolish the proposed OT Law completely. Another professor, Dr. Cho Kyong Chul, also contends a similar thesis that all the six antitheses dispute the Jewish interpretation of the Law that has limited and misinterpreted the will of the Lord and instead clarifies God`s own will. He claims that such Jewish interpretation goes back even to Moses himself. On the other hand, professor Oh Duck Ho interprets the antitheses as fulfilling the Law by radicalizing it. And professor Ra Yoseop contends that Jesus presents even perfect content of the Law with the authority of God in terms of antitheses. Thus, in this paper, I attempt to present some guidelines of interpretation of the antitheses by examining the Matthew context of the antitheses and exegeting the 5th and 6th antitheses in particular. My contention is that Jesus does not dispute nor overturn the Old Testament Law in his antitheses, but rather present the true meaning of the Law to criticize and correct the Pharisaic misinterpretation or abuse of the Law for his disciples.
