The main claim of this study is to graft the method outlined and used in Aristotle"s Ethics onto bioethics. This study begins by giving a outline of Aristotle"s ethical method. The main argument is made in two stages. First, it is argued that Aristotelian ethical method is credible because it compares favourably with alternatives. In this argument it is shown that Aristotelian method is not vulnerable to criticisms that are made both of methods that give a primary place to moral theory such as utilitarianism and methods(such as social science approaches) that eschew moral theory. Second, the appropriateness of Aristotelian ethical method is indicated through outlining how it would deal with a particular bioethical case.

본 연구의 목적은 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학적 탐구방법이 생의윤리학적 문제의 해결에 도움이 된다는 것을 보여주는 데 있다. 아리스토텔레스는 엔독사(endoxa)와 더불어 윤리학적 탐구를 시작한다. 아리스토텔레스에게 윤리학적 탐구의 출발점에는 엔독사만 있는 것이 아니라 아포리아(aporia)도 있다. 엔독사와 더불어 아포리아에 직면할 때, 우리는 보다 더 확실한 토대를 마련해야 한다. 그렇게 함으로써 우리는 무엇이 옳고 그른지를, 그리고 어떻게 해서 잘못이 발생했는지를 알게 된다.
아리스토텔레스의 윤리학적 탐구방법을 비판하는 입장에 서 있는 사람들은 아포리아를 변증법적으로 해소하는 단계에 대해서 동의하지 않을 수도 있다. 그들은 공리주의 윤리설이나 칸트(I. Kant)의 윤리설과 같은 윤리이론에 최고의 자리를 내주거나 사례기반 추론법이나 배려윤리학처럼 실천을 중시하여 윤리이론을 아예 멀리한다. 전자의 경우 윤리이론으로부터 엔독사와 분명히 모순적인 혹은 혐오감을 자아내는 결론에 직면했을 때, 그 결론이 윤리이론으로부터 나왔다는 주장에 설득당할 사람은 별로 없다. 후자의 경우 생의윤리학은 비판적이고 규범적인 날을 상실한다.
아리스토텔레스의 윤리학적 탐구방법은 경험에 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 세부적인데서 출발한다. 그러나 순수사회과학의 상향식 접근과는 달리, 그리고 배려윤리학처럼 상향적으로 접근하는 몇몇 응용윤리학과는 달리, 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학적 방법은 규범적이고 비판적인 날을 보유하고 있다. 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학적 탐구방법은 우리로 하여금 엔독사에 대한 단순한 기술(記述)을 넘어 엔독사 안의 아포리아를 해결하는 데에로 이동하게 해준다.
생의윤리학의 영역은 실천적 영역이자 의사결정을 해야 하는 영역이다. 따라서 논란이 많은 결론들은 생의윤리학의 영역에서는 설득력이 없다. 논란이 많은 결론들에 직면할 때, 즉 엔독사의 충돌로 말미암아 아포리아에 직면하게 될 때, 우리는 엔독사를 넘어서 이동할 필요가 있다. 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학적 탐구방법은 윤리이론에 의존하지 않으면서 이러한 이동이 어떻게 수행될 수 있는가를 보여준다.
