This paper aims to identify sets of ‘-Tay(yo)’s, and to clarify the unique characteristics and the use of each set of ‘-Tay(yo)’s. ’-Tay(yo)’s for reporting are widely regarded as contractions of ’-tako hay(yo)’s. But they denote characteristics which are different syntactically and semantically from ‘-tako hay(yo)’s. The types of the matrix sentences with ‘-tay(yo)’s are restricted to declaratives and interrogatives. The 1st person cannot be used as the subject of the matrix sentence. These ‘-tay(yo)’s are used for reporting utterances in the past, reporting habitual utterances of the present, and reporting utterances without exact sources. ‘-Tay(yo)’ for reporting without exact sources are different from the others in that the subject of the matrix sentence is not a specific person and the forms other than ‘-tay(yo)’ are not used. ‘-Tay(yo)’s for reporting utterances in the past are different from ‘-tay(yo)’s for reporting habitual utterances of present in that they can be substituted by past forms such as ‘-taysse(yo)’, ‘-tako haysse(yo), etc. and they can take the 2nd person as the subject of the matrix sentence besides the 3rd person.
