This study aims to discuss the figurative degree of words. Since a single word can be extended from being literally used to being figuratively used, it is general to use a single word for various meanings. To discuss the degree of a single word being figuratively used, this study extracted some example sentences of ‘OO like the Ocean’ from newspapers. The discussion of this study can be summarized as below.
In Chapter 2, this study examined the meanings of words and the semantic classification of nouns. In the first phrase, this study looked up the definition of ‘Bada[Ocean]’ in the dictionary and investigated its attribute. ‘Bada [Ocean]’ is a word with multiple meanings (polysemy) that has two sections in 6 kind of Korean dictionaries, and the second section was about the figurative usage of ‘Bada[Ocean]’. In the second phrase, this study investigated the semantic classification and semantic distance of nouns, and it was found that as a single word belongs to a semantic domain and another domain at the same time, it has a large semantic distance. Therefore, as the domains of two nouns figuratively used are more distant from each other, the semantic distances of two figures of speech gets more distant from each other as well. As the semantic distance gets more distant, the figurative degree of words gets larger as well.
In Chapter 3, this study investigated the figurative degree of the word, ‘Bada[Ocean]’. ‘Bada[Ocean]’ is a word that belongs to the space object out of the individual noun objects in terms of noun classification. However, other individual objets and nouns belonging to the human can be figuratively used for ‘Bada[Ocean]’ in addition to space objects in the same domain as ‘Bada[Ocean]’, and accident nouns, abstract nouns are figuratively used out of all the mode nouns. There are some differences in the figurative degree among them, and the standards of distinguishing the figurative degree can be largely divided into the semantic classification, cognitive attribute and the degree of sharing.
